Album review: Paukwa

Dela’s (Adeline Maranga) Paukwa (a Swahili word used to call for the listener’s attention to a folk story) talks about her story giving the listener her experiences and expectations.

At 20 years old, Dela’s sound is an edgy soulful mix of Afro, Neo-Soul, Reggae and Hiphop consisting of music with a conscious messages of issues such as love, corruption as well as some of the pain and sufferings that people in the community undergo.

She is Penya Africa's first lady whose songs are characterized by Neo-soul, Reggae, Acoustic soul and Rap beats.

He is good…he is just not good enough

Famed Jamaican-American reggae musician Shaggy (Orville Richard Burrell) praised the woman in his hit song ‘Strength of a woman,’ but what I liked most about the song is when  he says that ‘she can nag and be a constant pain’ then goes on praising and appreciating her strengths.

No one is perfect and wanting a ‘perfect’ man is blatantly unreasonable as a relationship is about two imperfect beings coming together as one, ready to live with the few weaknesses that cannot be changed.

A chat with Nina Ogot

Haiya: How did you come up this idea?

Nina: “I had a dream…it is an idea I thought about. Initially I discussed it with my friend and movie maker, Lupita Nyongo who would later introduce me to Keith Sanders of the Theater Group.

Tired of doing the same old routine, afro-acoustic artist Nina Ogot incorporates music and theater to make up ‘Sauti Ya Kimya’.
